Often when I talk to people who have no prior experience with essential oils (EOs), there is naturally a little hesitation. I used to be that person. In fact, as I’ve shared many times before, I used to believe essential oils were a bunch of new-agey hocus-pocus voodoo magic. Now I am constantly in awe at all the science there is to back up the benefits people experience every day.

Are you the type of person who thinks you can’t get started with oils until you do a little more research? Yup, that was me too! What if I told you that you need to only understand 3 things before you open your first bottle of liquid gold? Allow me to take the mystery or even fear out of using essential oils. You absolutely, positively DO NOT need to be a chemist, pharmacist, biologist, doctor, or hippie to use EOs.

Before I share those 3 things with you, you need to know that essential oils are only meant for the following demographics:

  • Human beings and animals ranging in age between birth and death
  • People wanting more energy and vitality
  • People desiring optimal health and wellness
  • People wanting more natural solutions to health challenges
  • People wanting to support their health without the harmful side-effects of pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter drugs.
  • People wanting to eliminate harmful toxins and chemicals from their home, body, and diet.

If you don’t fall into any of these categories no need to read any further. If you fall into every one of these categories you need to run, not walk your fingers to this website as soon as you’re finished reading this post!

To my detriment, I am a nerdy, geeky, sciency, skeptic and I thought I did have to know the ins and outs of essentials oils before I used them or shared them with others. Trust me, if you wait until you know everything there is to know about EOs before you use them, you will NEVER use them. Why? Because there is so much fantastic information out there about them and people (like Gary Young) have dedicated their entire lives to discovering and studying them. Something tells me you probably don’t want to take a lifetime doing the same.

The oily, granola life is a JOURNEY, a marathon, an adventure….not a sprint or fad. That being said, know that you will continuously be learning, growing, adapting, and experimenting with your oils for the rest of your life. This is the fun part! I’ve been using oils for about 6 years now and I’m still learning new stuff ALL the time! You don’t have to have it figured out in one day. Writer, Anne Lamott, says “Perfection is shallow, unreal, and fatally uninteresting.” Enjoy the process. If you can read, you are an essential oil candidate. Looking stuff up on the internet or in books about EOs will become a little hobby of your’s. I’ve learned to keep it simple! Just because I love talking about the science of essential oils doesn’t mean others do. If you do, call me and we can chat for hours! For those who couldn’t care less, let me break it down for you.

So what 3 things should you know before using essential oils? (In non-sciency terms)

What Essential Oils Are: Essential oils are the delectable liquid goodness running throughout plants, trees, roots, and flowers. They keep the plant healthy, protected, and beautiful. This life-blood of the plant is extracted through careful steam distillation, cold pressing, or resin tapping. They contain potent NATURAL chemicals that can be safely used in and on the body. In fact, essential oils do an amazing job of supporting our body by cleansing, nourishing and beautifying it. This plant material and our bodies have a harmonious relationship. EOs even support our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. I like to think of essential oils as the missing puzzle piece in our health and wellness journey.

When and For What They Can Be Used: You can use essential oils EVERY DAY to support a healthy lifestyle. Don’t wait for a health crisis until you use oils. Start now, start today! Young Living has oodles of oils that naturally support healthy systems of the body. You know the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz? Stay “oiled-up” so you don’t get rusty. Consistent essential oil use will help support your body in doing what it was designed to do in the first place.

You can also use them for health “challenges”. Tummy trouble? Head Discomfort? Your mother-in-law comes to town? (I love you Judy!) Truly, there IS an oil for just about everything. This is where essential oil reference guides and the internet come in handy. Check out Young Living or other reputable resources to find out what to use for what ails you. Ask your Granola Babes family what they do. You are not expected to know it all. We learn by asking questions. Then we can share what we learn with others.

How to Use Them: There are 3 ways to use essential oils….actually I say 4!

Aromatically: smelling from the bottle, using an essential oil diffuser, putting a drop in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together then cup them over your nose and mouth while breathing deeply, making a room spray, etc. Anyway you can enjoy the aroma of an oil without dripping the oils in your nose is great! (That’s a no no by the way),

Topically: Like I said before, if you can read, you can use EOs because using oils on your skin is as easy as reading the back of the bottle to see how and where to apply an oil. It will instruct you if you need to use it in combination with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, etc. Keep away from eyes and don’t put oils in your ears. If you should have the unfortunate experience of getting an oil like, say Peppermint in your eye (raising my hand right now, me me me!) then flush it with a carrier oil like olive oil or any of the oils I mentioned above–never use water. Citrus oils are photosensitive so don’t rub citrus oils on skin that will be exposed to sun within 48 hours.

Internally: ONLY Young Living essential oils are safe to ingest. Thankfully, Young Living has created the Vitality line so we know which oils we can safely use as a dietary supplement and in our cooking. Again, the back of the bottle will indicate how much and when to use these oils in this way.

In your home (I’ve added this one): Using essential oils along with other natural cleaning ingredients is the perfect way to rid your home of the harmful chemicals in your cleaning and personal care products. Plus, you get the added benefits of a great smelling home and body. Using EOs in your home for this purpose allows you to create not just a “green” home but a healing home too! Check out my new book Granola Living to learn how you can make your own non-toxic cleaning, personal care, and beauty products using essential oils.

I’m bummed that I didn’t learn about essential oils sooner. The reason I love spreading the word about essential oils is because I have experienced such amazing and life-changing results and I want others to experience them too. It may seem dramatic to say that so I will spare you the details of how my women’s issues were “handled” with essential oils and oil-infused supplements. I could have really used the oils a long time ago but it is what it is. So don’t keep your oils a secret! Tell everyone you know about them…even if you don’t know a lot about them, you know a little. Just share what you do know and let others figure it out like you. I think group support is important so I encourage you to get involved in the Granola Babes Facebook Group. Please join our movement of Educating, Encouraging, and Empowering others to a life of health and wellness using essential oils and other natural remedies! Experts need not apply!
